The Historic Martin Franklin Hanley House stands as a window to our past illuminating the many people that lived and died within the once young St. Louis County community.  Constructed by Martin F. Hanley in 1855, this Greek revival farmstead is typical of architecture of its day but its inhabitants were far from ordinary.  Today the home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and it is the oldest structure in the City of Clayton.  The Historic Hanley House remains relatively untouched by modern life and together with the surviving Hanley family letters, the history of nineteenth century rural Missouri comes to life within its walls.

Our Mission & Objectives:
The mission of the Historic Hanley House is to preserve and interpret the site and its collection to enhance the effectiveness of the museum as an educational and cultural resource for the community, with these objectives:

1. Assure that the farmhouse which Martin Franklin Hanley built shall be preserved as a faithful evocation of Clayton's origins, for the wonderment and education of generations to come.
2. Bring the history of the Martin Franklin Hanley House into the modern consciousness as a cultural asset particularly valuable for our urban environment.
3. Encourage broad participation by the community through the establishment of a self-supporting foundation.
4. Partner with educational institutions to create curriculum involving the Martin Franklin Hanley House for Kindergarten - Graduate School.

9-1-10 Hanley House Full Moon Flashlight Tour - On September 24, grab your flashlight for a unique tour of the oldest house in Clayton. The full moon will help illuminate this farmstead built in 1855. Hanley House interpreters will share family stories around a campfire. 6-3-10 Public Forums to Continue the Master Plan - We are currently undertaking further refinement of the Master Plan that was completed in 2007. In order to do so, a series of Public Forums are scheduled to solicit input from residents concerning potential enhancements related to program areas in Shaw Park and Hanley Park. 5-26-10 Hanley House Closed Memorial Day Weekend - The Historic Hanley House will be closed for the Holiday Weekend.  We are sorry if this has caused an inconvenience.

4-30-10 Hanley House Herb Sale Saturday - Join us in Hanley Park for the annual Historic Hanley House Herb Sale. This is your chance to buy your spring herbs and support the museum. You can also stroll through the Hanley House herb garden and learn about popular 19th century plant life. Herbs sold for a cost of $3 each.

4-3-10 Hanley House Now Open - The Historic Hanley House is now open for the 2010 season.  The museum is open to the public every Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Guided tours are available for a cost of $3 per adult and children 12 and under are free.
